Signs of ovulation: knowing your fertile window

Ovulation is when an ovary releases an egg — the few days around it are the only time in your cycle you can conceive. Whether you're trying for a baby or just want to understand your body, these are the signs that ovulation is near, and an honest note on what tracking can and can't do.

Your fertile window is a handful of days — the signs point to them.

This tool is not contraception and does not confirm ovulation. If you're trying to conceive without success after 12 months (or 6 months if you're 35 or older), or your cycles are very irregular, speak to a clinician.

The main signs ovulation is near

    1. Cervical mucus changes

In the days before ovulation, cervical mucus typically becomes clearer, wetter and stretchy — often compared to raw egg white. This is one of the most useful real-time signs that your fertile window is open.

    2. A small rise in basal body temperature

After ovulation, your resting temperature rises slightly (about 0.3°C) and stays up until your period. Measured first thing each morning, it confirms that ovulation has already happened — useful for spotting your pattern over time, less so for predicting the day in advance.

    3. Ovulation pain (mittelschmerz)

Some people feel a dull ache or twinge on one side of the lower abdomen around ovulation. It usually lasts a few hours to a day and switches sides from cycle to cycle.

    4. The LH surge

A hormone (luteinising hormone) surges 24–36 hours before ovulation. Home ovulation predictor kits detect this surge in urine and are the most direct way to time the fertile window in advance.

    5. Secondary signs

A higher sex drive, mild breast tenderness, or a heightened sense of smell around mid-cycle are common softer cues. On their own they're not reliable, but they add to the picture.

    6. Cycle timing as an estimate

Ovulation happens roughly 12–16 days before your next period — not necessarily 'day 14'. Tracking several cycles lets an app estimate your likely window, which you then confirm with the physical signs above.

    Common questions

How long is the fertile window?
About six days: the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself, because sperm can survive several days while the egg lasts around 24 hours. The two to three days before ovulation are the most fertile.
Can I use a cycle app as contraception?
No. Emmenia's predictions are for insight and planning, not birth control. Ovulation timing varies, and prediction can't account for that reliably enough to prevent pregnancy. If you don't want to conceive, use a proven contraceptive method.
Why track ovulation if I'm not trying to conceive?
Confirming that you ovulate — and when — helps explain cycle length, PMS or PMDD timing, and mid-cycle symptoms, and gives a clinician a clearer picture if periods are irregular.
What if I see no signs of ovulation?
Occasional cycles without ovulation are normal, but if you rarely notice any signs, have very irregular cycles, or have been trying to conceive for over a year (or six months if you're 35+), see a clinician.
